My Intent to You

Everyone knows that I am now a PROUD Future Professional of Gary Manuel Aveda Institute! As part of their application process, I had to write a Letter of Intent to the Admissions Leader and I wish to share it with you all! Its important to me that every future client of mines knows that this is something I take very seriously.
It is my art, it is my craft, it is my passion.

Letter of Intent

This letter is meant to enlighten you on why I am passionate about the world of cosmetology and how your program fits into my current life.

I began braiding hair at nine years old. I have no clue how I learned because no one sat down and taught me. In fact, I am the only one of four daughters raised together that even has a passion for hair at all. Even at that very young age “doing hair” was my favorite activity to do. I remember literally begging my little sister to let me do her hair but, she was just a seven-year old, tender-headed, little girl with no care for personal appearance, so that never went in my favor. I was left to my first loyal client, my baby doll. She was a Christmas gift and she had “good hair”. She had a full head of hair with realistic hair follicles- like a human scalp as oppose to a doll with huge bald spaces and hair around the edges and down the middle to create two ponytails.

I would practice braiding and do the same style on her over and over. I would start a braid behind her ear, go across the top to the other ear, creating a crown, then zig zag the rest back and forth all the way down. It was my favorite style to do! I would practice it over and over, I was a perfectionist, I paid attention to detail, and most importantly it gave me so much joy to see the end result and be so proud of my work. Hair care is truly a passion for me.

I enrolled in Seattle Vocational Institute’s Cosmetology Program when I was nineteen years old and completed two quarters. Long story short, I was a little lost, trying to “find myself” and my priorities were nowhere close to in order. I am twenty-six now. I am married with two beautiful kids. I know exactly who I am and I know where I want to be. From the time I was nine until now, through all that life has had to offer me, I have never lost the passion that I have for hair care. It has been one of the few things that have remained consistent in my life.  Not only do I plan to own a salon, I am also excited to educate the masses about natural hair care which is a big movement in the Black community.

I know now is the time for me to accomplish my goals and reach my full potential in life. I am very appreciative of the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute for giving me the opportunity to attain my Cosmetology Certification. I am looking forward to a very exciting and life changing year with all the staff and students.

Thank you,

Tele-Aramaine McCray
