Young Loc Journey
At what age did you begin your child’s Loc Journey? Did you already
know you were going to loc their hair when they were born or was it a decision
you made randomly one day? And most importantly- what age, is the “right” age?
Well for me- it was no question that my son, Amir, would have Locs. I
started my husband’s almost 6 years ago, then my mother and father followed
suit about 3 years ago, THEN my daughter wanted “hair like her daddy” at age 5-
a little over a year ago. That being said- I was feeling left out! I started my
journey literally 4 months after seeing my daughters progress (and slightly
developing jealousy lol). But seriously, I was super encouraged to take the
leap at that point. So obviously when we got pregnant with our son he was
DESTINED to have Locs. The question for me was, WHEN?!
First my concern was allowing his hair to fully grow in and develop. He
was born with a lot of hair but of course his perimeter was thin and soft, and
he had the common bald spot from sleeping on his back. I knew that for sure I
wanted to wait until those areas grew in before I twisted his hair.
My second concern was his texture. Since he was our second child I knew
that his “baby hair” texture would not last and so I wanted to also wait until
his kinky textured hair came in.
Overall, I was waiting on DEVELOPMENT.
I made a moment of twisting his Locs. I gave him a nice bath a washed
his hair. I got cute videos ad pictures of him with his curls. And I really
took my time with his Locs. He may have these very same Locs his whole life, so
they had to be perfect. I worked on them for 3 days and I am happy with how
they came out. I will post a picture of his completed hair soon 😊
