Rule of Thumb: Sleep on Silk
One important key
to maintaining natural hair is retaining moisture. A very quick and simple rule
of thumb is to always, always, always sleep on silk. Under all circumstances,
you want to avoid your hair having contact with any cotton like scarves,
bandanas, pillow cases, etc. Cotton is very absorbent. When you wrap your hair
with cotton material or sleep on it throughout the night it instantaneously
begins to absorb all of moisture and oils from your hair. Cotton is an excellent
choice to towel dry after you wash your hair but you never want to wrap your
hair with it and wear it for an extensive period.
If you have ever
slept on a cotton pillowcase without a silk scarf you may remember noticing
what appears to be oil stains on your pillow after you wake. You may also have
noticed your hair being extra stiff, dry, or brittle. Those are all effects of
the moisture being drained from your hair nightly. Even if your hair is not “freshly
done” it is always in your best interest to wrap your hair in silk at night. If
it is hard for you to get into a nightly routine of wrapping your hair, sleep
on a silk pillowcase. Once you begin to sleep on silk you will immediately see
the difference in moisture in your natural hair.
