Introduction to Sister's Guide to Natural Hair Care

I can remember getting my hair relaxed as early as 7 years old. I can still hear the tune to the “Just for Me” song that came in the all-in-one hair relaxer kit. That little hot pink cassette tape was mine and my little sister’s most exciting part of getting a fresh new relaxer at home. We each had our own hair relaxer kit and raced to open up our boxes- whoever got their box opened first got to use to cassette player first, just a playful thing we did as little girls. Ultimately, it didn't matter whose cassette got played first, once the song started, we were jamming “Just for meeeee, Just for meeeeeeee….” It made us happy to feel the cold chemical mixture upon our scalps knowing that once it was rinsed out our hair would be straight and blowing in the wind- How it was “supposed” to be.

Although getting a relaxer for me as a child was very exciting- it really affected me mentally. Even at just 13 years old I made it my personal business to ensure my hair was relaxed religiously every 4-6 weeks. I grew up thinking that my hair was completely unmanageable without a relaxer. I grew up thinking my edges needed to be slick and straight in order for my pony tail to be exceptional. It took me a long time to “come into my own” and embrace my extremely curly textured hair and now that I have I am making it my mission to help other women join me on this truly liberating journey.

I want to use this platform to reach out to those who are thinking about going all natural and create a great resource for inspiration and to help build confidence. Being all natural is easy but the transition may not be for some and it definitely wasn't easy for me and I am here to support. Join me in my personal journey of natural hair growth while I share stories, show you ways to manage and style your natural hair, and challenge you to change.
